In October 2013, Sepp Blatter spoke of guaranteeing the Caribbean Football Union’s region a position in the World Cup. In the edition of 25 October 2013 of the FIFA Weekly Blatter wrote that: „From a purely sporting perspective, I would like to see globalisation finally taken seriously, and the African and Asian national associations accorded the status they deserve at the FIFA World Cup. nbcvisit It cannot be that the European and South American confederations lay claim to the majority of the berths at the World Cup.“ Those two remarks suggested to commentators that Blatter could be putting himself forward for re-election to the FIFA Presidency.
On 4 June 2015, Chuck Blazer while co-operating with the FBI and the Swiss authorities admitted that he and the other members of FIFA’s then-executive committee were bribed in order to promote the 1998 and 2010 World Cups. On 10 June 2015, Swiss authorities seized computer data from the offices of Sepp Blatter. The same day, FIFA postponed the bidding process for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in light of the allegations surrounding bribery in the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Then-secretary general Jérôme Valcke stated, „Due to the situation, I think it’s nonsense to start any bidding process for the time being.“ On 28 October 2015, Blatter and FIFA VP Michel Platini, a potential candidate for presidency, were suspended for 90 days; both maintained their innocence in statements made to the news media.
In all, 80 nations have played in at least one World Cup. Of these, eight national teams have won the World Cup, and they have added stars to their badges, with each star representing a World Cup victory. Uruguay, however, chose to display four stars on their badge, representing their two gold medals at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics, which are recognized by FIFA as World Championships, and their two World Cup titles in 1930 and 1950.
As of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, 22 final tournaments have been held since the event’s inception in 1930, and a total of 80 national teams have competed. The trophy has been won by eight national teams. With five wins, Brazil is the only team to have played in every tournament. The other World Cup winners are Germany and Italy, with four titles each; Argentina, with three titles; France and inaugural winner Uruguay, each with two titles; and England and Spain, with one title each.

• Freeman has 10 RBIs this series, passing Gil Hodges (1956) and Duke Snider (1952) for most RBIs in a World Series in Dodgers history (RBI official since 1920). Snider and Hodges each had eight in seven games. This was Game 4. Freeman’s 10 RBIs are also the most in the first four games of a World Series, ahead of Tony Fernandez (1993), Bobby Richardson (1960) and Lou Gehrig (1928), who each had nine. Richardson’s 12 total that year is the record for a single World Series.
Volpe pounced on the first pitch Hudson offered him, an 89 mph slider that nicked the bottom of the zone before the Yankees shortstop barreled it to left field. Fans couldn’t believe it as the ball kept sailing over left fielder Teoscar Hernández’s head and into the seats. Only when it safely landed beyond the left-field wall did an anxious and restless home crowd of 49,354 finally erupt for the first time in this World Series.
• With Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in Game 1, this — the 120th World Series — is just the fourth with multiple grand slams. It also happened in 1987 from Kent Hrbek and Dan Gladden, in 1964 from Ken Boyer and Joe Pepitone and in 1956 from Yogi Berra and Bill „Moose“ Skowron. 2024 and 1964 are the only times each team hit one.
Game 4 world series
• Volpe became the first Yankee with a grand slam and multiple stolen bases in a game, regular season or postseason, since Mickey Mantle on Aug. 19, 1962. He’s the second in postseason history to do so, joining Shane Victorino in Game 2 of the 2008 NLDS.
The Yankees still have plenty of work to do. Aaron Judge’s eighth-inning RBI single was a good sign. Volpe’s tremendous all-around performance — he went 2-for-3, drove in four runs, scored three runs and was very good on defense — could portend the sort of lineup depth the Yankees need. Austin Wells also went 2-for-3 and hit a home run. The Dodgers didn’t use any of their leverage relievers, so the Yankees must contend with that. But no team that ever trailed 3-0 in the World Series has forced a Game 6. The Yankees gave themselves a chance to be the first. — Jeff Passan
• Freeman has now homered in six consecutive World Series games, dating back to 2021 with the Braves. That’s the longest streak in the Fall Classic, breaking a tie with Springer. Freeman has homered in his last four games, breaking a tie with 1985 Bill Madlock for the longest streak in Dodgers postseason history.
Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning for New York. Alex Verdugo’s RBI single chased Jack Flaherty in the second, and Giancarlo Stanton’s third-inning homer against Ryan Brasier built a 5-0 Yankees lead.
• The Dodgers and Yankees had a World Series preview June 7-9 at Yankee Stadium, with Los Angeles winning two of the three games. Teoscar Hernández had a go-ahead, two-run double in the 11th inning of the first game, a 2-1 Dodgers win, then hit two homers in an 11-3 rout the next night. The Yanks salvaged the finale with a 6-4 win, powered by Trent Grisham’s three-run homer off Tyler Glasnow.
